Dear Inmate Number 75309,

Congratulations on the completion of your appeals hearings!  We hope the experience was a rewarding one, and that you feel you know more about the Justice System now than you did coming into them.

The Illinois Department of Corrections and the Office of the Attorney General will be reviewing your case with Governor Quinn to compare notes and make a decision regarding the date, location, and method of your death, or, alternately, the possibility of the Governor granting you an indefinite stay of execution.

This decision might take some time, though.  There are a lot of factors to consider, and as your attorney was so fond of telling jury after jury, there’s no such thing as an open and shut case.  Of course, beyond just the facts, there’s the moral dilemma.  As the hordes of protestors outside of our offices remind us every morning, we’re deciding on taking a man’s life.  TAKING A MAN’S LIFE!!!!  There will be blood on our hands, 75309.  Your. Blood.

And then there’s this whole other group of protestors, who REALLY want you dead.  You think they’re any less vocal?  I mean, you’ve done some stuff, 75309 (allegedly).  And society doesn’t function if we just let that slide every time someone finds Jesus or teaches kids about why gangs are bad or whichever cliche version of “I’ve learned my lesson” you presented us.  People remind us of that every day.  And the messed up part, Twitchy Eddy — we can drop the formalities at this point and just call you Twitchy Eddy, can’t we? — the messed up part is that BOTH sides get to vote.  WE are supposed to represent THEM.  Are we supposed to just KNOW what’s right?  Who are we, to just assume we can just take your future in our hands?

This is always a difficult decision, and we want to be as meticulous as possible.  A judgement will be given before the end of the time. [<–fix this later]

Whether you are pardoned or not, we hope you continue to utilize the Illinois Department of Corrections facilities as a place to reform your behavior and become a useful, positive part of society.
